Community. respect.educating. inquiry. Life in Ms. Escamilla's 5th grade
We had a guest speaker today, representative John Kivela. The students studied up on the legislative branch and Mr. Kivela before he came. The students had some really great questions about his views on things, what his job is like, and his experiences working in Lansing.

Our class was lucky to be the first kids out on the playground and make fresh tracks. We had a blast sliding, flipping, jumping and doing cartwheels. I have been juggling ideas on a great name tag project for our desks. I wanted the kids to have a name tag that they are proud of, not one that they will pick at that will make their desks look messy.
I finally came across some inspiration on Pinterest for a character study and it lead to googling websites for photo editing. Using Pixlr the kids worked so creatively to personalize their name tags. They are all such a great reflection of their individual personalities. I can't wait to laminate them all when we get back from our snow day. Here are a few below ( with the names blurred). Enjoy! Ms. Escamilla Our kindergarten buddies earned a special day and they chose to spend part of their day with us. We were invited to play games in the afternoon. The kids played Chutes and Ladders, Headbands, Candyland, Connect 4, Life among other games. Here are a few pictures from our afternoon. Every Tuesday, we work hard sorting, organizing and totaling Econo receipts. The whole school has been donating their Econo receipts, and 1% of the total dollar amount on the receipts gets donated towards Bay Cliff. As more and more of the class is becoming involved in working on this task we are becoming more and more efficient. Next week we hope to have enough bundles sorted and totaled (1,000 receipts) to be turned in and cashed out for 1% of their total value.
It was a busy day in 5th grade! In addition to all that we do in one day out classroom was a polling station at Cherry Creek. We had first, second and third grade classes stop by and use our Chromebooks with the guidance of our 5th graders to vote for this years election using a Google Form. Here are some photos of us with Mrs. Lundin's first graders. We were lucky to learn more about Force and Motion with several carnival themed stations. The kids had a blast learning with all of these hands on activities. The Northern students did such a fantastic job planning a wide range of vocabulary that fit in perfectly with everything that we had been learning about.
