Community. respect.educating. inquiry. Life in Ms. Escamilla's 5th grade
We prepared for a week planning lessons to teach our Kindergarten buddies about force. We planned lessons on balanced and unbalanced forces as well as contact and non contact force. Our fifth graders did amazing teaching, the kindergartener's were very interested in what our class planned for them.

We tested how three different objects (marble, wood block, and penny) responded on three different surfaces with varying degrees of friction. It was a blast watching the students work together in such a positive manner and make predictions before they pushed their objects. We had a guest speaker come in today and share with us lots of information about the magic of aviation. Our 5th graders learned about the 4 forces of flight. They then were able to test these forces by creating paper airplanes. Some students researched airplanes to make, others tried to create their own. They practiced flying and tweaking their planes by adding lift or by changing the way the air flowed around the wings of the plane to add spin. It was a fun afternoon. We have so many brave students who are always so willing to come up and take on a math challenge. It's so fun to watch their gears turning as they are presented with new problems. This week we focused on fire safety. The kids have been creating posters this week that focus on the importance of testing your smoke detectors monthly. The winner from fifth grade will win a ride in a fire truck. Today the students were each assigned a different geological location within the continental United States. We started with a compass rose taped onto the ground and the Missisippi River. The rest of the students filled into our space as mountain ranges, oceans, major rivers, the Great Lakes, and plains. The photo above is the center of the United States with our original Mississippi River. On the left we have the Rocky Mountains, in the center are the Great Plains and on the far right are the Appalachians. In the photo above are our Appalachian Mountains with the Atlantic Ocean in the distance. In this photo are our Rocky Mountains with the Sierra Nevada mountains behind them. Tucked away back there we have the Pacific Ocean. |
